Have you considered doing your divorce yourself?  Lots of people have.  In today’s world, where there is so much information online, it has arguably never been easier.  With technological advances it is easy to see why people can feel empowered to get a divorce without the need for legal support.  However, is that a good thing?

Looking away from family law for a moment.  Consider another scenario.  If you need a tooth extracting, you could go online and find out how to do it yourself and save money going to see a dentist.  However, would that be a good idea?  Of course not.  You don’t have a dentist’s experience and sill.  You’ve never taken anyone’s tooth out so why would you even contemplate doing your own?!  The extraction is going to be more painful and you’re likely to have lots of complications if you don’t use an expert.

Getting divorced is much the same.  Whilst the information (and misinformation) is out there and could get a divorce on your own, you have no experience of divorce and will not be aware of the may pitfalls that you can fall into.  You’re not an expert in spotting and avoiding the may problems and pitfalls that can cost you time, money and worry.  You also will have no experience in negotiating a divorce settlement gained from advising thousands of people in a similar position to you.

It is vital to understand that every divorce involves a unique set of facts.

So why is it better to have a solicitor?

Of course, you would expect a solicitor to say that it is better to have legal advice.  Lawyers, as a whole, have never had the best press and can be considered by some as ambulance chasers or money grabbing.  But solicitors exist for a reason, and if we didn’t add value, we wouldn’t exist.

Our solicitors are the best around.  They have experience from thousands of other cases.   You, on the other hand, are likely to be going through divorce for the first (and hopefully last) time.  You also cannot be objective if the case concerns you.

Ultimately, having a solicitor on your side will ensure you are protected.
